LONDON — Two American soldiers won medals in track and field events at the world championships.

Army reservist Sam Kendricks was promoted in March to first lieutenant and at the world championships he went from bronze at the Olympics in Rio to gold in pole vaulting.

“I was the best jumper I can be on a shorter pole than everyone else. Tonight, it handed me my victory,” said Kendricks, who cleared 5.95 meters to earn the win.
