Jan. 25 was a monumental day for University of Akron pole vaulter Matt Ludwig.

Against Kent State during an indoor dual meet, the Lake Catholic graduate set a world standard in the pole vault with an effort of 19 feet, 1 1/2 inches.

A week earlier on Jan. 18 in Reno, Nev., Ludwig had a huge performance at the National Pole Vault Convention. In winning the event with a vault of 18 feet, 8.75 inches, he posted the world’s No. 2 mark, but that was surpassed against Kent State on Jan. 25.

After Ludwig cleared 19-1.5 and fell on the landing area, a number of Zips teammates mobbed him and created a pile-up in celebration.
