MANHATTAN, N.Y. – Somers senior Michael Altieri has been battling a knee injury throughout the indoor track and field season.

But it hasn’t stopped him from thriving in the pole vault.

Altieri placed first at the Class A sectionals with a vault of 13-6 on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan.

“The key for Michael is his dedication,” Somers coach Jesse Arnett said. “He has had an ongoing knee injury and has been doing pool workouts for the last month to stay in competition form. He tells me the pool is rough, but he does it despite the difficulty which shows me how much he wants to be a top pole vaulter. His ability to excel despite the injury proves how mentally tough he is.”
