EPPING pole vaulter Mudith Jayasekara has been chosen in the Australian team to contest the Australian Youth Olympic Festival at Sydney Olympic Park from January 16 to 20.The competition features more than 1750 athletes from 30 countries.Mudith, who turned 16 in October and is a finalist in this year’s Northern District Times Junior Sports Star awards, has also been selected for an Athletics Australia junior high performance camp in January.
”The camp is for (those) already representing Australia and athletes expected to represent Australia within the next three years,” Mudith told the Times.”I also participated in the 2012 Australian All School Athletics Championships held in Hobart in the Under 18s Men’s Pole Vault and ended up with a silver medal just behind my training partner.”The competition only had every second age group so I had to compete with one age group older which the winner was part of.”
Mudith, who attends James Ruse Agricultural High School in Carlingford, won the gold medal in the Under 17 Division pole vault at the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships in March.”I’m now ranked No. 1 in Australia for Under 17s pole vault,” he said.
