For more than a decade, Rick Harper has been taking Blue Devils to new heights.

In 2011, he mentored Davis High’s Ian Rock when the local kid won the state pole vault title and went on to stand out at Duke. Harper coached his son Nate to lofty status. The younger Harper has found himself a track mainstay at Tennessee.

And last spring — with world-class 18-year-old vaulter Sondre Guttormsen descending to town from the Norse heavens to set a California prep record (17-10) while winning the CIF crown — Harper further added to his reputation as a versatile coach who can nurture, encourage or support a student-athlete as he or she reaches new levels of accomplishment.
