Coleman graduate Curtis Bell was used to overcoming unexpected challenges throughout his collegiate pole vault career. So it was perhaps no great surprise that he had to wait out Tropical Storm Alberto for four hours in his coach’s car before going out and capturing his third NAIA national pole vault title on the final day of his Aquinas College track and field career.

Once the downpour subsided and the competition was able to resume late in the afternoon, Bell cleared 16 feet, 7 inches to win the outdoor championship in Gulf Shores, Ala., on Saturday, May 26.
