EAST FLAT ROCK — In middle school, Pearl Ballard had a predicament before a track meet. She wasn’t sure how to fix her hair for the meet. She ended up letting her mom braid it and a tradition was born.

“I’ve always had my mom braid my hair,” the East Henderson athlete said. “Since middle school, I’ve had Dutch and French braids in my hair for every meet.”

She had the braids on Monday night at the Henderson County Championships and they served her well. She won two events on Monday, but it was West Henderson that dominated the meet.

West’s boys’ and girls’ track teams won the meet on Monday. Regardless, Ballard’s mom is happy to be a part of her daughter’s track tradition.
