At 6-foot-3 and 197 pounds, Olympic gold medalist Don Bragg thought of himself as a modern-day Tarzan.

He won the pole vault at the 1960 Rome Games and then celebrated his nickname with a chest-thumping yell from the victory stand. It’s been described as “the growl of a dog, a trill sung by a soprano, a note played on a violin’s G string and the howl of a hyena recorded backward.”
