Edinburg Vela pole vaulter Nick Larsen was seriously injured Wednesday while practicing for the Region IV meet, which began Friday in San Antonio.
According to sources with knowledge of the incident, Larsen fell on his head during a vault attempt at the school. He was conscious after the fall but went in and out of consciousness in the ambulance while being taken to the hospital. Larsen was unconscious going into surgery.
Following surgery, Larsen was sedated and able to move his extremities. A source said the injury was to his skull, and he is expected to be taken off sedation within the next two days.
“We haven’t gotten a lot of updates, but he did go to major surgery Wednesday night, and we went and had a visit with him but he was just coming out of surgery,” Edinburg CISD Athletic Director Roy Garza said. “It’s not a very good sight to see, and we are hoping for the best — the next three to four days are critical.”
