Gates Chili’s Erica Ellis set a national junior pole vault record for Saturday at the Akron pole vault convention with a jump of 14 feet, 1½ inches.

The height also set a New York state record for high school juniors and 16 year olds. The jump is more than a foot higher than her Section V record of 13-1.

According to Rick Suhr, who helps train Ellis along with Olympic gold medalist Jenn Suhr, it could not be determined if Saturday’s height could be considered a Section V record since Ellis is competing as an independent.
