ORLAND — Opportunities to compete locally in pole vault are slim, and yet, Logan Meredith has ascended to set one of the top marks for his age.

Meredith, 12, just completed sixth grade at Capay Joint Union Elementary School in Orland. Nearing the finish of the school year June 1, he entered into the Golden West Invitational at Oak Ridge High in El Dorado Hills, hoping to establish an official USATF mark for the first time this year.

Against fellow sixth-graders Khaliq Muhammad and Brady Murphy, he competed in the middle school division and cleared the bar set at 9 feet. He tied a personal best and became one of six athletes in his grade nationwide to clear 9-0. Muhammad and Washington’s Sawyer Dean share the top spot at 9-6.
