EDWARDSVILLE — Payton Flowers has been a pole vaulter for only one year, but it’s already enough to land her a college scholarship.

On Wednesday, the Edwardsville High School senior signed a letter of intent to compete on the women’s track and field team at Culver Stockon College in Canton, Mo.

Flowers, a former distance runner for EHS, will also compete in the sprints at Culver-Stockton. But the pole vault, in which she appeared for the first time as a junior last spring, will be her primary event.

“I’ve dreamt about going to this school my entire life and I’ve accomplished one of my biggest goals and now I’m ready to set new goals and keep on achieving,” said Flowers, who will also compete in the sprints.
