You have to admire a state champion who won’t settle for the mark they achieved to claim that title.

Liam Landau is that athlete. The Pascack Hills senior entered the NJSIAA boys indoor track Meet of Champions with the state’s best mark of the season and fell short of that while winning his first state title, clearing the pole vault bar at 15-6 on his first attempt on Saturday at the Bennett Center in Toms River.

Landau actually fought off two other boys who cleared 15-6, albeit with more attempts needed. Bradley Jelmert of Watchung Hills placed second after clearing 15-6 on his second try, and Simon Schenck of Princeton placed third after needing three tries at the winning height.
