Lee junior Rory Maguire has put his heart and soul into pole vaulting.
Maguire travels to Lubbock three times a week to train with the Wild West Track Club and he was a fixture at the Rebel football team’s 7 a.m. weight lifting sessions before school earlier this season.
The countless hours of training paid off April 27 when Maguire placed third in the boys pole vault by clearing 15 feet, 3 inches at the Region I-6A Track Meet to earn the wild card berth to the UIL State Track & Field Championships, Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Maguire and discus and shot put thrower Paige Low will be the first Lee athletes since 2011 to represent their school at the state track meet when they compete on the University of Texas campus this weekend.
“I just know that pole vault is the biggest part of my life,” Maguire said. “To be successful at it, it’s important to put the time in. That’s really what I have been focusing on this year, just working as hard as I possibly can.”
