A former Florence High School student returned from his time at Beloit College in Wisconsin with a little extra weight after winning multiple awards.

Matthew Miller, who graduated from FHS in 2015, won the Joe Kobyka Award and the Ben Galloway Award, which are athletic awards for sportsmanship and leadership, and the Warren Miller Blue Skies Award that goes to a student who “is seen as a saving grace on campus.”

“I was not ready for that one (The Galloway Award); (it) was a big surprise,” Miller said.

Part of the surprise behind winning the Ben Galloway Award is that Ben Galloway was the one who recruited Miller to Beloit in the first place. Galloway saw Miller play in his last basketball game as a Husky when the Huskies traveled to Colorado Academy in the first round of the 3A state boys basketball tournament. The Huskies lost 62-46, but in that game, Galloway saw something.
