NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Monroe College pole vaulter Francisco Escobar earned the title of Mr. World, the world’s most desirable man, after a two-week competition in the United Kingdom.The 21-year-old native of Cali, Colombia defeated 47 other challengers from around the world to earn the title.”I was surprised that I won,” he said upon his return to the states.  “It’s good for my country to get this recognition.

Also, I was proud to compete in all the events in my Monroe Mustangs gear.  I told everyone there how well I’ve been treated at Monroe and how happy I am here.”Judges score competitors in extreme sports, multimedia, fashion and style, talent and sports. Escobar said he struggled most with the extreme sports portion, an army-style obstacle course.Escobar fared very well in the sports portion, which featured swimming, golf, soccer and running. He produced a video about the town of Canterbury for his multimedia project and performed magic for his talent.

Officials asked Escobar to remain in England after the competition to meet the media but he came back to New York as quickly as possible to make sure he got back to his classes to keep up his 3.8 GPA.Escobar promised officials he would fulfill his Mr. World responsibilities after the academic year and track and field competitions end in May.
