No competition? No problem for Kyle Mulhern.

Despite being the only pole vaulter competing Tuesday in a dual against Peoria High, the Notre Dame junior broke the school record he shared with Josh Getz by going 15 feet.

“In the crazy world of pole vaulting, this was a pleasant and unexpected surprise,” Notre Dame coach Dan Gray said, after Mulhern set the mark on his third and final try at 15-0. “Boy, he cleared that with at least three to four inches to spare. Good to see this clearance at a low-key outdoor meet with no actual jumping competitors alongside him.”

Mulhern tied Getz’ mark of 14-6 (set in 2017) multiple times last year — the last time at the Class 2A state meet in Charleston, where he finished sixth.
