Abigail Craig doesn’t remember the first time she pole vaulted. She figures it was sometime in sixth grade.

She does remember her father, Steve, teaching her how to hold the pole using a broomstick in their back yard.

Abigail was curious because her older brother Adam had been competing in the event for a year. Like Adam, she learned the basics from Steve Craig, a former decathlete at South Dakota.

She felt an instantaneous connection to the unique event.

“It’s something that’s always made sense to me,” said Abigail, now a sophomore at San Antonio Christian. “It’s different and fun. The friends I’ve made at pole vault, they are my best friends in the world because we bond over this weird thing that we all do with each other.”
