Nathan Newsome, the girls track-and-field coach at West Forsyth, couldn’t believe how wrong he’d been about Lindsay Absher after her first couple of weeks on the team. He thought she was the perfect athlete for the pole vault.

“I’d seen her at my daughter’s gymnastics place about once a week and noticed she was very athletic,” Newsome said. “I always thought it would be great to get a gymnast to do the pole vault, because a pole vaulter needs to be able to do pull-ups and not mind being upside-down.”
