He leans back, finding the balance of a pole twice his height. After mere moments, Vicente Jordan “VJ” Vanderlipe exhales quickly and pushes through strides taking him closer to his target.
The pole makes contact and Vanderlipe’s frame glides up before reaching its apex above the cross bar, turning smoothly to land cleanly on the padding below.
Running full speed to clear a cross bar higher than a basketball hoop with nothing but a pole less than two inches in diameter isn’t for the faint of heart. Yet Vanderlipe’s made a routine of it for the Eagles to the tune of setting records every season he’s been at the school.
