St. Lawrence Secondary School in Cornwall has a provincial track and field medal winner.

And that’s saying something.

“It’s been over 30 years,” said Rory Blackadder, a teacher and coach at St. Lawrence, which has had many athletes go to OFSAA track and field meets over the years.

But until Grade 9 student Kowen Hesse recently snagged a silver for pole vault in Guelph, it had been a long drought in the medals department.

“Hopefully there’ll be more (OFSAA medals for Hesse and others) to come (in future years),” said Blackadder, who has specialized in coaching pole vault at several high schools in SDG over the last 15 years.
