Lafayette High’s Mondo Duplantis soared to new heights Thursday. And, for once, he didn’t need a pole to do it.
The star pole vaulter received the 2016-17 Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year award in front of teammates, friends and family.
The presentation at Lafayette High was a surprise for Duplantis, who vaulted his way into international elite status with unprecedented success this spring. His greatest highlight came when Duplantis cleared 19 feet, 4.25 inches at the Texas Relays, shattering the national high school record by nearly a foot and also setting the world junior under-20 age group mark.
