CASTALIA — Beach time? Nope.
Maybe a side trip to do some sightseeing? No again.
Moments after finishing as an All-American at the New Balance Nationals — one of the most prestigious events for high school track and field athletes — Margaretta’s Kenna Stimmel could only think of one thing: getting back to work.
The Polar Bears’ freshman pole-vaulting sensation, who broke not only school records but numerous meet records this spring en route to a Division III state championship, tied a personal-best with a jump of 13 feet, 0.25 inches last Saturday. She placed fifth among 27 of the most elite high school pole vaulters the U.S. has to offer in the meet at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro. The top six earned All-American status.
To qualify for the meet, a vaulter must meet the 12-06.25-height requirement. Stimmel set a Division III state record with her winning jump at the state meet and met the qualification height on five occasions during the outdoor season.
