On Saturday, the Washington track and field team started its season with the annual UW Indoor Preview at the Dempsey Indoor Track. However, one group in particular stood out.

The men’s pole vaulting unit dominated the competition in the opening meet placing two vaulters in the top three and all six in the top eight. Junior Chase Smith won the event by clearing 17 feet, 7 inches. Close behind in third, sophomore Jacob Bowler almost beat his personal record at 16 feet, 7.25 inches. He was followed by fellow sophomore Zachary Shugart who topped out at 16 feet, 1.25 inches in fifth. Redshirt-freshman Taylor Barnes and junior Blaise Black tied in sixth at the same height while redshirt-freshman Parker Kennedy rounded out the group Washington vaulters in eighth at 15 feet, 7.25 inches.
