TORRANCE — Paige Sommers competed in her own unique version of the 800 meters on Saturday afternoon.

Competing in two field events simultaneously at the CIF-Southern Section Track and Field Divisional Finals at El Camino College, the Westlake High sophomore had to quickly and efficiently hustle from end zone to end zone between pole vault and long jump attempts at Murdock Stadium.

“I had to tell myself to stay mentally strong and not let it get to me,” Sommers said. “The first couple times, I was sprinting, worried about not making it back to pole vault.”

John Sommers, Paige’s father and coach, reminder her to walk. Sommers had to balance between moving too quickly, and potentially tiring her legs out, and not quick enough.
