AKRON, Ohio – A star-studded cast – including Olympic Team hopefuls, national champions and NCAA national champions – will highlight the list of competitors putting their elite skills on display at the third annual Pole Vault Convention, hosted by The University of Akron track and field program Jan. 10 at Stile Athletics Field House.

In all, the elite pole vault competition will feature 25 athletes (13 men’s competitors and 12 women’s competitors) and is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the door.

The convention will also include guest appearances by 2004 U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Tim Mack. Mack will talk about his preparation leading up winning gold in Athens from 11:30-12:30 p.m.

Both Mack and former American record holder Jeff Hartwig will join Dave Hunter from Track and Field News as commentators during the competition.

The list of men’s competitors include Akron junior and 2014 NCAA Indoor champion and Canadian record holder Shawn Barber; 2012 Olympian Jeremy Scott; 2014 USA national champion Sam Kendrick who was ranked No. 1 in the U.S. in 2014; 2013 USA national Ccampion Jordan Scott; three-time USTA champion Mark Hollis; two-time NCAA All-American Colton Ross; five-time Canadian national champion Jason Wurster.

Forrmer and current collegiate stars Max Babits (Eastern Michigan); Josh Dangel (Cincinnati); Torben Laidig (Virginia Tech); Brian Mondschein (Virginia Tech); Drew Volz (Indiana) and Sean Young (South Florida) also are in the men’s field.

Women’s competitors include Becky Holliday, who placed fourth at the 2014 USA Outdoor National Championship; Janice Keppler, who finished fourth at the 2013 USA National Indoor Championship; Keisa Monterola, three-time Central American and Caribbean national champion; Kat Majester, who placed fifth at the 2014 USA National Indoor Championship; Kelsie Ahbe, a 2014 USTFCCA All-American at Indiana; 2011 NCAA Outdoor Champion Melissa Gergel; five-time NCAA All-American Kayla Caldwell; two-time NCAA All-American Merrit Van Meter; former Kansas NCAA All-American Demi Payne; NCAA Division II record holder Katie Nageotte, who placed ninth at the 2014 USA National Indoor Championship,

Zips’ senior Claire Lucas, who is a two-time USTFCCCA All-American after earning a berth in the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships along with Akron redshirt sophomore Caroline Hasse, a 2014 USTFCCCA All-American after qualifying for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championship round out the women’s field.

Akron’s annual Pole Vault Convention is an all-inclusive pole vault experience for athletes, coaches and parents that features classroom sessions, learn-by-doing clinics, and competitions.

The three-day convention, which is the vision of Zips’ head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell, begins with registration Friday at 5 p.m. Mitchell has coached 70 All-American honors during his career, including All-Americans in the pole vault at the University of Texas, University of North Carolina, and University of Akron.
