2013 Preview: Big 10 Indiana; Twins highlight Indiana

2011 (SOPHOMORE):   Indoor: Took second at Big Tens, clearing 4.05m (13-3.5) for All-Big Ten honors … cleared a season-best 4.11m (13-5.75) at the GaREAT Collegiate Invitational. Outdoor: Took sixth at the NCAA Championships, clearing 4.30m (14-1.25) to tie for fourth and move into second on IU’s all-time list as second 14-foot vaulter in IU history … took second at Big Tens to teammate Vera Neuenswander, clearing 4.26m (13-11.75) for All-Big Ten laurels … took second at Penn Relays, bettering the previous meet record with a clearance of 4.25m (13-11.25) … clocked a career best of 12.85 in the 100m at the Polytan Invitational … named Academic All-Big Ten.

2009-10 (FRESHMAN):Indoor: Took sixth at Big Tens, scoring four points for the Hoosiers … cleared 3.95m (12-11.5) at Big Tens, third-best all-time at IU. Outdoor: Earned her way into the NCAA East Preliminaries by becoming the third woman in IU history over four meters and 13 feet in the pole vault … cleared 4.06m (13-3.75) at the Penn Relays to take second in the women’s college section … advanced through the regional with a clearance of 4.00m (13-1.5) … cleared 4.10m (13-5.5) for 14th at the NCAA Championships, moving into third all-time at Indiana … took second at Big Tens with a clearance of 4.00m, claiming All-Big Ten Honors … took second at the USA Championships in the junior pole vault, claiming a spot on Team USA at the IAAF Jr. World Championships … took seventh at worlds, clearing 3.95m (12-11.5).

Prep:Won two state titles in the pole vault for Dan Gourley at Green … took league, district and regional championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009 … holds the Ohio state meet record in the pole vault (12’4) … holds school records in the pole vault and 800m … earned Academic All-Ohio honors, the Scholar Athlete Award, the Mark Crogan Award and the Ms. Bulldog Award … first team all-league and all-district in soccer … led her soccer team to a regional title and two district titles … competed in swimming and club gymnastics … class vice president and a member of National Honor Society.

Personal: Daughter of Brad and Susan Ahbe … has two brothers, named Bradley and Austin, and a sister, named Lindsey … born July 6, 1991 … nursing major

Angie Charles   Angie Charles; RS Freshman;Orangevale, Calif.

PREP:   Standout for Clay Taft at Bella Vista … set school records in the pole vault for a freshman, sophomore and senior … helped her team to four-straight league titles … also lettered in diving … made the honor roll in English, history and biology … was a gymnast for 10 years before entering track and field.

PERSONAL:   Daughter of Gary and Charlene Charles … has two brothers, Bryan and her twin Drew … born December 24, 1992 … neuroscience major.

COACH HELMER:   “Angie joins our outstanding vault program with solid marks and fresh legs.  Coach Wiseman believes she has only scratched the surface of what she can do and that she has the tools to get better and better.  Time on the runway and in the pit will be important as she continues to develop as an overall athlete.”

Nina Gutermuth    Nina Gutermuth; RS Freshman; Leo, Ind.

PREP:   State champion for her dad, John Gutermuth, at Leo … won the 2011 Indiana state title in the pole vault, clearing a state record 13 feet … three-time Most Outstanding Athlete honoree at Bend High School in Oregon … helped Leo take 13th at the 2011 Indiana state meet in just the pole vault, with her sister, Sophie (also on IU’s roster) taking second … took third at the Oregon state meet in 2009 and fourth in 2010 … holds the current state high school record in the pole vault in Oregon.

PERSONAL:   Daughter of John Gutermuth and Molly Hanns … has an identical twin sister, Sophie, who is also on the IU track and field roster … born November 2, 1992 … exercise science major.

COACH HELMER:   “Nina and Sophie Gutermuth were very, very impressive several weeks ago at the Indiana State Meet.  They demonstrated the size, athleticism, intensity and poise necessary to give them a great chance to be outstanding National level pole vaulters during their time here at IU.  They will be good, the only question is how good?”

PREP:   All-stater for her dad, John Gutermuth, at Leo … took second in the pole vault indoors and outdoors in Indiana in 2011 … cleared a PR of 12-6 in the pole vault … earned most improved honors in 2008 and Bend High School in Oregon … helped Leo take 13th at the 2011 Indiana state meet in just the pole vault, with her sister, Nina (also on IU’s roster) taking first … set the Bend H.S. record by clearing 10-8 in 2009 … also lettered in cheerleading in 2009.
