Air Force pole vaulter Ishara Sandaruwan improved his own national record with a jump of 4.91m to win the men’s pole vault event of the South Asian Games trial held at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Thursday. While all other events of the SA Games trial were conducted at Diyagama the jumping event was conducted at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Sandruwan who smashed the long standing National pole vault record for the first time in September (at the Thailand Open Athletic Championships) improved his record by one centimeter yesterday.

Incidentally, athletes from Air Force were responsible for both National records created on day one of the SA Games. Air Force and Sri Jayawardenapura University athlete Sumeda Ranasinghe established a new national record in the men’s javelin at Diyagama.
