All Area Girls Track Player of the Year

GREENVILLE — It wasn’t the way it was supposed to go for her, not her last year in high school. But even as a stress fracture in her foot nagged at her since last year, Greenville’s Landon Kemp fought through it and still managed to out-do much of the state’s competition in track.

Now in a boot for the next eight weeks, Kemp can do what she’s not used to — relax, giving her time to reflect on what she accomplished this year, a year she calls the most difficult she’s had as an athlete.

Despite the injury, she retrained herself to leap off the opposite foot for long jump and hurdles and qualified for those two events as the state meet, finishing second and fifth, respectively, while also repeating as Division 2 pole vault champion, which undoubtedly makes her The Daily News girls track Player of the Year.
