All-First Coast girls track: High-flying Roberts a victor in vault

Bolles junior is the Times-Union’s girls track and field athlete of the year.

For some, the road to track and field victory starts on a basketball court, or a football field.

For Laine Roberts, the flight to the top of Florida’s track world began in a shopping mall.

Really.

Now, she’s soaring high above the pack in the Sunshine State as a two-time state champion, and she’s the Times-Union’s girls track and field athlete of the year.

The high-flying Bolles junior won her second consecutive Florida High School Athletic Association championship for Class 2A in her hometown at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium.

Her best height this year was 12 feet, 10 3/4 inches at the Bolles Relays on her home track. No one else in Florida could even come close.

“Nobody works harder than Laine,” Bolles track coach Dan Dearing said. “She’s a great example of somebody who’s very dedicated to her craft.”
