New Caney pole vaulter Nastassja Campbell was poised to chase state gold last season, then she suffered a knee injury on her third jump in Austin, forcing her to have surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

It was a devastating setback – but Campbell wasn’t discouraged.

She threw herself into rehab with determination, allowing her not only to return in less than a year, but to secure a national title in her first major meet back in March, tie for first at the Texas Relays and claim the UIL Class 5A pole vault championship with a 5A-record vault of 13 feet, 9 inches in May.
