TORONTO — It is in the middle of an interview when Alysha Newman says something I did not expect a world-class pole vaulter to say.

“I hated it,” she says of the sport in which she is now ranked third in the world. “I was scared of it.”

 It was a hesitant move, and one that ultimately wrecked a tendon and led to surgery.
