DURHAM, N.C. — Senior Justin Amezquita was named the Ronald McDonald House Duke Charities Student-Athlete of the Week after opening the 2014 indoor track and field season in record-setting fashion at the Virginia Tech Invitational Saturday, Jan. 18.
The Mountainside, N.J., native earned a second-place finish after clearing 17-5.75 (5.33) on his third attempt at the height. The clearance bested the previous school record vault of 17-5.00 (5.31), also held by Amezquita.
Entering his senior campaign, Amezquita has continually progressed in the pole vault, opening his collegiate career with a personal-best mark of 15-7.00. The three-time ACC Indoor Championship participant ranked 24th nationally in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason rankings list, prior to this weekend’s performance. Amezquita also currently sits in second-place on Duke’s all-time outdoor pole vault performance list with a height of 17-1.00 (5.21).
