Abbey Kuhn knows all too well about near misses in the pole vault, her specialty in track and field.

The West Aurora junior qualified for state each of the past two years and was three inches short of qualifying for finals each time.

She cleared 10 feet, 9 inches as a freshman but needed 11-0 to advance. Last year, 10-9 would have advanced, but she peaked at 10-6.

“I did better the first year,” she said. “It was kind of disappointing.”
