Barber To Compete In IAAF World Championships In Russia Saturday

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron pole vaulter Shawn Barber will compete at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, at Luzhniki Stadium early Saturday morning.

Barber, who was a two-time USTFCCCA All-American during his sensational freshman campaign at UA in 2013, will be one of nearly 2,000 athletes from more than 200 nations competing for medals. The Texas native, who has dual citizenship, will represent Team Canada as the youngest competitor in the event.

The qualifying round of the pole vault competition will begin Saturday at 2:15 a.m. ET. With a qualifying mark Saturday, Barber will advance to Monday’s final round, which will start at 11 a.m. ET.

Flight sheets for Saturday’s qualifying round have been posted. Universal Sports subscribers can watch the pole vault competition on-line here.

Barber, who became the Canadian Pole Vault Record Holder last spring, won the Canadian pole vault championship earlier this summer to qualify for the World Championships. He was the No. 1-ranked pole vaulter in the NCAA for much of the 2013 season and placed third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after sweeping event titles at the Mid-American Conference Indoor and Outdoor meets.
