According to Asif Hossain of the Canadian Olympic Committee on Friday, Shawnacy Barber of Toronto, Ontario won the silver medal in a Diamond League track and field event in Brussels, Belgium by jumping 5.85 metres in the men’s pole vault. It was the first time this season that Barber won a medal in a Diamond League event.
Renaud Lavillenie of France won the gold medal with a jump of 5.95 metres. Konstantinos Filippidis of Greece won the bronze medal with a jump of 5.8 metres. Barber got on to the podium by 0.20 metres. Sam Kendricks of the United States finished in fourth place with 5.65 metres.
With the silver medal in Brussels, Barber finished tied for third in the 2015 Diamond League standings with Pawel Wojciechowski of Poland and Kendricks. Lavillenie, who won four of seven Diamond League events, won the 2015 Diamond League Standings with 21 points. Filippidis was second with 12 points.
Despite Canada’s remarkable eight medals at the 2015 World Track and Field Championships in Beijing last month (which included Barber’s gold medal), Barber was the only Canadian athlete to finish in the top three in the 2015 Diamond League standings. His silver medal will give him confidence as he prepares for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
