WAVERLY, Iowa—Wartburg College head men’s and women’s track and field coach, Marcus Newsom, announced today that Stephanie Nicole Barnes has been named an assistant coach with the program.
Barnes replaces Dave Sage as the jumps coach who retired following the 2013 National Championship season.
Barnes completed a stellar pole vault career at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where she was a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion. She was a six-time All-American, three-time WIAC pole vault champion, eight-time All-Conference finisher and eight-time Academic All-Conference honoree.
She was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (WIAC) nominee for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year in 2006-07 and was one of the 30 finalists.
Barnes also holds Wartburg’s stadium record in the pole vault set at the 2005 National Championships which Wartburg hosted. She also still holds the Blugolds’ school records in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault.
Barnes comes to Wartburg from Illinois State University where she oversaw the pole vault program and assisted with the high jump and multi events for the past two years. She coached two school record holders in the pole vault in addition to two All-Conference performances and one NCAA qualifier (outdoors).
Prior to Illinois State, she was an assistant track and field and cross country coach at her alma mater for one year. She served as the pole vault coach and coached six WIAC scorers in this event.
