BHS’ Bradford sets outdoor state mark in pole vault

BELLEVILLE — Bloomington High School senior Zachery Bradford cleared 17 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault Saturday, the highest outdoors in state history, while helping BHS to second place in the Class 3A Belleville West boys track and field sectional.

Bradford has cleared 18 feet indoors, but the Kansas recruit’s previous best outdoors was 17-6. He also was on BHS’ winning 1,600-meter relay, joining James Ellis, Gemonte Lyons and Drew Crooks to win in 3 minutes, 19.82 seconds. BHS had 67 points to trail only Edwardsville (97) in the 16-team field.
