Big-Time Track Returning to Sacramento

SACRAMENTO-

Major track is coming back to Sacramento.

FOX40 News has learned USA Track and Field is very close to finalizing an agreement to hold its 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento. A source, wishing to remain anonymous, as the agreement is not yet complete,  told FOX40 News the final details of the deal are little more than a formality.

The meet will be held at CSU-Sacramento June 26 through 29 next summer.

The best track and field athletes in the country compete in this meet, which every four years becomes the US Olympic Trials. Sacramento hosted the Trials leading up the Olympics in 2000 and 2004.

Sacramento has also hosted four NCAA National Championship track meets – in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Next summer’s Outdoor Championships will be the first major track meet held here since 2007. These events traditionally draw track fans from all across the country, providing a boost for the local economy.

According to our source, the final agreement cementing the deal between USATF and Sacramento should be announced early next week. We first learned in July of this year that the Sacramento Sports Commission had bid for the 2014 Outdoor Championships.
