Bloomquist breaks SC pole vault record at Cowley Tiger Invite

Two collegiate track meets within an hour of Winfield enabled the Southwestern College men’s track and field team to pick and choose its competition last week. The Moundbuilders sent selected distance runners to Wichita for the Friends University Enduro Classic Friday evening, then sent the rest of the squad to Arkansas City for Saturday’s Cowley Tiger Invitational.

Friends University Enduro Classic

Three Moundbuilders competed in the 5,000 meter run at Friday’s Friends University Enduro Classic. Colton McNinch led the way and finished third with a time of 15:26.42. Trey Bruton posted a 15:53.14 time that was good enough for a seventh place finish. Devin Hlavenka also ran in Friday’s 5K, and finished 19th in 17:54.62.

Two Southwestern 4×800 meter relay teams participated in Friday’s meet. The Moundbuilder A team (Keegan Gregg/Taylor Parker/Eric Anders/Sam McDaniel) won the event in 8:00.49, while the B team (Christian Wacker/Nick Warnke/Caleb Jackson/Brandon Hatch) finished second in 8:19.71 and defeated third-place Sterling by three seconds.

2014 Cowley Tiger Invitational

Cowley Tiger Invitational. Taylor Parker won the Moundbuilder-heavy event with a time of 4:08.41. Trey Bruton was just over a second back and finished second in 4:09.57, while Colton McNinch was fourth in 4:11.46.

The Moundbuilders also found success in the 800 meter run in which Sam McDaniel and Keegan Gregg posted third and fifth-place finishes, respectively, separated by just .06 seconds.

Southwestern claimed the No. 4, 5 and 6 finishes in the 5,000 meter run. Caleb Jackson finished fourth in 16:32.04, while Eric Anders was fifth in 16:43.55, and Brandon Hatch posted a 17:02.36 time to finish sixth.

In the field events, Cayd Bloomquist established a new school record with a pole vault clearance of 4.65m (15’ 3”). Bloomquist was tied for first in the event but finished second on attempts.

Chris Paddock took second in the hammer throw with a heave of 42.90m (140’ 9”). Paddock also finished fifth in the discus (40.61m – 133’ 3”) and seventh in the shot put (11.80m – 38’ 8.75”).
