Emily Gallagher and Miya Kuramoto have been swapping the top spot in pole vault for years now, their names commonly changing positions between first and second.

That they’re teammates on the Lansing High School track team is exactly why they’ve continued to do so, leading up to the New York State Public High School Track & Field Championships at Union-Endicott this weekend where both will compete in the event the senior Gallagher is the reigning champion in for Division II.

“They’ve been pushing each other a tremendous amount,” head coach Becca Lovenheim said Monday at the track while the athletes waited out a brief rain storm before practice.
