BORDEN — Borden took the first-day lead at the boys’ and girls’ Southern Athletic Conference track meet, with Eric Wheatley’s school record in the pole vault with a leap of 15-feet-7 among the highlights.

The Borden boys lead second-place Henryville as action was slated to resume Thursday with boys running events and girls field events.

Wheatley broke a pole during practice Monday and hurt his elbow in the process.

“I was pretty nervous walking in here. The first jump it hurt really bad. With each jump it got more and more loose and felt better and better,” Wheatley said. “I got on a pole that was heavier than I jumped on throughout the year. That’s what got me the extra spring.”
