Pole Vault Athlete of the Year: Jett Gordon (Marina, Jr.)
Eichelberger’s Take: The Vikings junior emerged as one of the state’s top vaulters early in the season, winning titles at the Irvine Invitational and the Trophy Invitational. He saved his best performance of the season for his home invitational, as Gordon became the only vaulter in the county to scale 16 feet in a winning performance at the Marina-hosted Beach Cities Invitational. Gordon’s season nearly came to an end after a shoulder injury suffered during a dual meet in late March sidelined him for a month. But he returned to action in victorious fashion, winning the Sunset League title and the CIF-SS Division 2 crown. Gordon’s breakthrough season (which included six clearances of 15 feet, 6 inches or higher), ended with a second place finish at the CIF State Championships.
