Runners are the flashiest athletes in track and field, and it’s easy to get caught up in the sprinters and distance runners.

But the athletes on the field side are just as talented. In Broward County, one of the top field athletes this year is Cardinal Gibbons pole vaulter Jimmy Nutt.

“It’s definitely not one of those events that everyone pays attention to, but it’s a lot of fun,” Nutt said. “And it’s definitely my favorite event in track.”

Nutt was the sole Broward County male athlete to win an individual state title in Class 2A or Class 1A, winning gold in the Class 2A pole vault, and now he is the Sun Sentinel’s Broward Class 2A-1A athlete of the year.
