February 9, 2013 – The GVSU Big Meet has become known as one of the largest indoor track meets in all of Division II, with its more than 1,700 entered athletes and 85 different schools represented. While some of Hillsdale College’s finest were in competition at the Kelly Family Events Center, others were stuck in the worst blizzard the Northeast has seen in 35 years.
Several field athletes had good days on the second day of the meet in Allendale, highlighted by senior Kayla Caldwell, winning the pole vault once again. The 2012 national runner-up cleared 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches at the meet.
Senior Adrianna Yancho took a strong sixth place in the high jump with a mark of 5-3. Another 2012 All-American, senior Kathy Dirksen, finished seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 68-6. Sophomore Heather Lantis also had a good day, achieving a personal record in the shot put with a toss of 40-11 1/2.
Many of the team’s sprinters and hurdlers were scheduled to compete in the two-day Valentine’s Invitational, hosted by Boston University this weekend. But the storm known as “Nemo” dumped more than two feet of snow in the New England area over the weekend, and the meet was canceled.
