City bid to go out on a high at home

City of Portsmouth AC bid to end the season on a high as they host the final UK Youth Development U17/U20 League match of the year at the Mountbatten Centre tomorrow.

The club have had a below-par season, mainly because of low numbers, but have still managed to earn a hard-fought fourth place in the table.

Despite a lack of depth, City have enjoyed impressive individual performances and their expectations are high for some strong performances tomorrow.

A strong squad of athletes will take on the competition, with good results expected – especially in the sprints and middle-distance events.

Tom Farres, who is ranked ninth in the country for his age, has led the way for Portsmouth so far this year in the pole vault and will be expecting to continue his winning ways.

The ever-reliable Matthew Bartlett has been in the form of his life and will be trying to maintain his unbeaten record in the 200m in the league this year.

In just her first year in the age group, Anita Ghosh showed her potential by winning the 100m B in her league debut last month and will be out to replicate the feat on her home track.

Kieran Martin is bidding to continue his first full season in athletics with personal bests in the 200m and 400m.

Also new to sprinting is Harry Pocock, who aims to improve his lifetime best after his fast run at the Hampshire Grand Prix last week.

In the middle-distance events, Matthew Smith hopes to build on a huge personal best he achieved on his way to the county schools’ title last month, as he competes in the 1,500m and 800m.

Meanwhile, Grace Smith will be in for a busy time at the Mountbatten Centre when she competes in the 800m, discus and long jump.

Fresh from her 3,000m personal best at the Hampshire Grand Prix last week, Ellie Czura attempts her first-ever 1,500m steeplechase.

City of Portsmouth will be in action next Sunday when the women’s team travel to Derby in the UK Women’s Athletics League.
