Cody sophomore Grace Shaffer started pole vaulting when she was 3 years old.

This year she learned the skill all over again, paying more attention to the fundamentals. At the state tournament last weekend in Gillette she turned that new knowledge into a vault of 11 feet 6 inches and a third-place finish, losing on misses as the top three girls all cleared the same height.

For Shaffer it was proof the work with father and coach Scott Shaffer to rebuild her skills paid off.

“This season has been a very big learning experience for me,” she said. “This year we really focused on my takeoff, run and getting on my top hand – all of those things are essential to my jumps.
