Cubans With New Athletic Challenges in Ostrava

Prague, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) Cuban athletes Yarisley Silva, Lazaro Borges and Guillermo Martinez will attend the 52nd edition of the Golden Spike, to be held in Ostrava, Czech Republic with the objective of reaffirming themselves in the global elite in their respective disciplines. Silva, silver medalist at the Olympic Games in London 2012, exhibits the best mark of the season in the pole vault with 4.90 meters, achieved in the recent meeting in Hengelo, Netherlands.

The pole-vaulter, 26, will face again the Russian Yelena Isinbayeva, who holds the world record of 5.06 m and now presents 4.70m as her best result this year.

In the male section, Borges, 27, has a discreet mark of 5.70m. It wont be easy for him as he will compete against Germans Bjorn Otto (5.90m) and Raphael Holzdeppe (5.91m), and against Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie (5.95m).

Martinez, about to turn 32, holds the second highest mark with a throw of 85.59m, only behind host Vít Zslav Vesel (86.94).

The Golden Shoe is an annual event that is part of the World Challenge of the International Federation of the sport , this year with a total of 221 athletes.
