Cuba’s Yarisley Silva won today a silver medal in the pole vault event at the athletic meet in the Czech city of Ostrava where Russian Yelena Isinbayeva finished first.
Silva, 26, was able to fly over the 4.72 meter-mark, but it was not enough to beat favourite Isinbayeva who jumped 4.78 meters. Third place went to host athlete Jirina Ptacnikova-Svobodová (4.62).
The Caribbean jumper, second at London Olympics 2012, holds her place among an elite group of athletes with great possibilities to access the final stage of the XIV World Athletic Championship to be held in Moscow, August 10 thru 18th.
The Cuban pole vault jumper still holds the best mark of the season with 4.90 meters, registered at the Henuelo tournament, in The Netherlands.
Her fellow countryman Lazaro Borges, on his part, jumped above 5.52 meters and placed himself seventh in the men’s competition, which was won by French Renaud Lavillenie (5.92)
