Curtis Pole Vaulter Dylan Duvio Earns June Athlete of the Month Honor

PATRIOTS STANDOUT REACHES ANOTHER NEW HEIGHT

NEW ORLEANS – Dylan Duvio, one of the top pole vaulters in the nation from John Curtis Christian School, has been selected as the June Amateur Athlete of the Month for Greater New Orleans as selected in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Duvio had a very memorable month of June as he was named the Gatorade Louisiana Boys’ Track & Field Athlete of the Year on June 20 and then on June 21, he qualified to represent Team USA in the Pan American competition in Medellin, Columbia, Aug. 23-25.

The Gatorade award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Duvio as Louisiana’s best high school boys track & field athlete.

The 6-foot-2 senior soared 16 feet, 8 inches to win the pole vault at the Class 2A state meet this spring, leading the Patriots to the state championship as a team. A three-time New Balance All-American, Duvio also won the pole vault at the Penn Relays and the Stanford Invitational. His season-best effort of 17-3.5 set a state composite record and ranked as the nation’s No. 2 performance among prep competitors in 2013 at the time of his selection.

Duvio has maintained a 3.87 GPA in the classroom. He has volunteered locally making goodwill visits to a retirement home, coaching youth track athletes and assisting in hurricane relief efforts. Duvio has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field on an athletic scholarship at Stanford University this fall.

Duvio qualified for Team USA during the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, where he cleared the bar at 16-8.75 to take second place. He was one of few high school-aged competitors in the field that included the nation’s best 17-19 year old athletes.

Despite the impressive month, Duvio was not a shoo-in for the honor as two other local standouts also were successful on the national stage. Daniel Cabrera, who will be a freshman at Curtis this fall, had an outstanding performance with the 15-Under National Team to make the final 20-man roster this month. Meanwhile, UL-Lafayette star Elfrid Payton, a graduate of John Ehret High, helped the United States to three wins on the way to the Gold at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
